A new state record and another Bergen-Bosco classic

If there's anything we've learned when Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep meet on a football field, it's that there's always an instant classic brewing.

That was the case once more in Oradell Saturday as the 70th edition was just as competitive as the last seven years with Bergen Catholic earning a 14-13 win, the seventh-consecutive year that the winner of this game has been decided by seven or fewer points.

In South Jersey, Woodrow Wilson quarterback Nick Kargman has been lighting it up. He somehow one-upped himself and, in doing so, the rest of the state as he set the single-game state record for most passing yards in a game.

Read more about Bergen Catholic's big win below and Kargman's record-setting day and catch up on all the high school football news, scores and highlights from around the state in this weekend's edition of hot takes.

Wilson's Kargman adds another record to resume

Nick Kargman, who set the South Jersey record when he threw eight touchdown passes in a victory over Camden Catholic two weeks ago, added another impressive record to his resume Saturday.

A senior quarterback, Kargman threw for a state record 539 yards as No. 9 Woodrow Wilson defeated host Cedar Creek 59-37 in a West Jersey Football League Constitution Division game. Kargman was 32-of-51 and tossed four touchdown passes - all in the second half.

Danny Williams of Timber Creek set the previous record of 536 yards against Kingsway on Nov. 22, 2013 in a 47-13 victory.

On Saturday, Woodrow Wilson (4-0) trailed 17-13 at halftime. But over the final 24 minutes, Kargman picked the Pirates apart. He completed 21-of-28 passes for 403 yards and at one point completed 14 straight.

“Coming out of the locker room, my confidence was up. Once I get into a rhythm, it gets easier,” he said.

Kargman has completed 93-of-148 passes for 1,598 yards and 20 touchdowns through four games. The owner of offers from Rutgers and just this week Jackson State, he leads the state in passing yards and touchdown passes.

Down to the wire again, Bergen Catholic downs Don Bosco in another classic

Pierson Tobia provided the game-sealing interception with 1:12 left to put the finishing touches on Bergen Catholic's 14-13 victory over Don Bosco Prep on Saturday in the 70th meeting between the two non-public rivals.

The win gave Bergen Catholic its second in a row over Don Bosco Prep, something it hasn't done since 1999. The Bergen Catholic defense, playing without star DE Aeneas DiCosmo after the four-star recruit suffered a fractured leg on the Crusaders' seventh play from scrimmage, limited Don Bosco Prep to just 152 yards of total offense and held RB Jalen Berger in check (17 carries, 63 yards).

Seton Hall Prep gets monumental win over Paramus Catholic

Senior quarterback Aidan Gilman (pictured above) accounted for 182 yards and three total touchdowns to lead Seton Hall Prep to a 37-29 victory over Paramus Catholic on Saturday.

Junior Matt Colantuono caught a 9-yard TD from Gilman and rushed for a 41-yard touchdown that sealed Seton Hall’s victory. The slotback finished with 137 yards of offense.

Seton Hall is now 2-2 under first-year head coach Bill Fitzgerald. The Pirates will take on former Super Essex Conference rivals East Orange and Montclair in the next two weeks.

Whole greater than Summit parts

Summit played far from a perfect football game Saturday against visiting North Hunterdon, yet was flawless enough times in clutch situations to fend up its big, bruising opponent, 22-9.

North Hunterdon (1-2) ran 27 more plays than Summit, made good on six of nine fourth-down conversion efforts, and wound up outgaining the Hilltoppers, 285-199. But Summit found ways to overcome those facts, thanks largely to some well-placed passes and runs by senior QB Skyler Schluter (two short TD runs and a scoring pass to Tyrone Hines, pictured above) and the rugged defensve play of Jack Kelly, Austin Groce and Jackson Tyler and others.

Summit is now 3-0 and tied with Immaculata for first place in the Raritan Division of the Mid-State 38 Conference.

Union rejoins conversation empatically

Union’s overtime win over Linden on opening night was impressive enough, but even more revealing the following week when Linden rebounded by snapping Westfield’s 37-game winning streak.

Anthony Sofia seals it as Randolph tops West Morris

All Randolph needed to ice the game against West Morris late in the fourth quarter was a first down.

Holding onto a three-point lead and facing third and 15 with two minutes to play, Randolph needed one big play from its offense.

That’s exactly what Randolph received thanks to an Anthony Sofia keeper that resulted in a 47-yard touchdown run, the only touchdown of the game, in a 10-0 win over West Morris.

Sofia’s score was backed up by a big defensive effort from Randolph, which kept West Morris out of the red zone the entire game while forcing three sacks.

"We have a sign in the locker room that says 'Eleven as One,’” Randolph coach Will Nahan said. “Guys sacrificing themselves and making the selfless play because they're playing within the system. That's team defense and they did their jobs."
