The IFA tech show is back, and barring Apple, every major tech company has something lined up

Europe’s biggest tech show IFA or Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, is going to kick off from 1 September. Unlike the Mobile World Congress which revolves around mobile technology, the IFA is an all-round show on the lines of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that is organized every year in Las Vegas. IFA has been providing a launch pad for major electronic companies and start-ups to show off their new products to journalists and consumers since 1924. We take a look at the some of the devices which are likely to be unveiled this time.
Smartphones
The wraps over the highly awaited LG V30 are likely to be lifted at the IFA this year. The successor to the V20 is going to be another music centric smartphone and will be powered by an improved version of Quad DAC (digital to analog convertor) used in the predecessor. The smartphone is believed to have a 6-inch screen with LG’s famed minimum bezel design, used in the G6 and Q6. LG hasn’t shied away from using the best-in-class hardware in the series, which means the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is likely in the cards.
Sony is likely to come up with the successor to the Xperia XZ which was also announced at IFA last year. It is likely to be called the Xperia XZ1 and will be the second smartphone after XZ Premium to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor. It can also be the first Sony smartphone to use their new 3-layer CMOS sensor which comes with a dedicated DRAM (dynamic random access memory) for cameras. It can improve the image processing speed in phone cameras.
Lenovo is expected to bring in a new phone in the X series at IFA this year. It is going to be the X4 and will be driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor, which is an improved version of Snapdragon 625. The information available on the smartphone suggests it will have a 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED display, dual cameras and will run Android 7.1.1.
Notebooks
We haven’t seen a new Chromebooks since June 2017. All major brands such as Acer and Asus that own a line-up of Chromebooks will be present at the show, so it won’t surprise us if they decide to showcase some of the products they have in the pipeline in the coming months.
Lenovo may unveil a new notebook in the Yoga 900 series, which hasn’t been updated in the last year. It will be a 2-in-1 device with the trademark 360 degree hinge design which allows it to be used it as a tablet and laptop.
Acer’s Predator series is also due for an update. The Predator 21X launched last year was powered by Intel’s Core i7 processor with two Nvidia GTX1080 GPUs. The new Predator is likely to take advantage of the more powerful X Series Core i9 chipsets from Intel which were launched early this year.
Smartwatches
Samsung may come up with a successor to the Gear S3 smartwatch. The Gear S3 was big and heavy and that may change this time. Samsung’s AI powered personal world assistant Bixby is also likely to show up on it.
Asus has unveiled a number of new smartphones recently and the list is pretty long. There is a whole new ZenFone 4 series and the dual camera based ZenFone Zoom S. The likelihood of releasing another smartphone looks thin. There is a strong possibility that the Taiwanese company is likely to unveil the successor to ZenWatch 3. The new ZenWatch is going to be based on the Android Wear OS for smartwatches.
